Topic: Persuasive Text : using media texts to support persuasive language and writing in the classroom

Website: www.alea.edu.auSummary: The workshop provides beaut ideas to support teachers addressing persuasive texts in the classroom. The ACTF has a variety of media productions that are exemplary of different contexts of persuasion. The workshop will draw on these examples to developed different ideas for addressing verbal and non-verbal persuasive devices.
Suggested teaching activities offer strategies for engaging primary and lower secondary to students in developing their skills and understanding in using persuasive language and develop confidence in persuasive writing.
The workshop will also provide links to curriculum websites that direct learning for Australian students in persuasive text and many other supportive websites for information and further activities.
This workshop will look at a collection of digital materials such as clips and images from various ACTF children’s television productions. These resources also provide focused teaching activities supporting the Australian Curriculum for English and the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).
Topics explored will include:
- Engaging students to critically think about persuasive devices and develop skills and knowledge of applying persuasive techniques in verbal and non-verbal situations.
- Viewing: developing knowledge and skills to read digital media, enhancing multi-literacy understanding and application
- Utilising relevant interactive resources that support outcomes for the Australian Curriculum for English (Literacy, Language and Literature)
The workshop includes high quality children’s TV programs produced by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF).
