My Place for Teachers, 2008-1778 and before time – a rich multi-literacy teaching resource that supports Literacy, Language and Literature.
My Place is both a favoured picture book by Nadia Wheatley and a popular television series, screened on the ABC. Each segment of the book and series looks at the historical and socio-cultural development of Australia, decade by decade, through the stories of children who live and play in the one location over time. Therefore, My Place lends itself to studies in English, History, Geography and Arts (Media Studies & Visual Arts). The ACTF and Education Services Australia (ESA) have developed a My Place for Teachers interactive website to support the use of My Place in the classroom. Additionally, the teaching resources help teachers implement the Australian Curriculum for English and History for years 3-6.
This workshop will look at how the text has been adapted to screen and using the clips from the series, it will explore how teachers can use the thematic collections, teaching resources and teacher forum within the website.
Topics explored will include:
- Engaging students to critically think about adapting text to screen
- Viewing: developing knowledge and skills to read digital media, enhancing multi-literacy understanding and application
- Utilising relevant interactive resources that support outcomes for the Australian Curriculum for English (Literacy, Language and Literature) and the Australian Curriculum for History
- Reviewing and evaluating how sample teachers have used My Place (book & series) in the classroom to support their (cross) disciplinary units of study.
The workshop includes high quality children’s TV programs produced by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF).
Persuasive Text : using media texts to support persuasive language and writing in the classroom
The workshop provides beaut ideas to support teachers addressing persuasive texts in the classroom. The ACTF has a variety of media productions that are exemplary of different contexts of persuasion. The workshop will draw on these examples to developed different ideas for addressing verbal and non-verbal persuasive devices.
Suggested teaching activities offer strategies for engaging primary and lower secondary to students in developing their skills and understanding in using persuasive language and develop confidence in persuasive writing.
The workshop will also provide links to curriculum websites that direct learning for Australian students in persuasive text and many other supportive websites for information and further activities.
This workshop will look at a collection of digital materials such as clips and images from various ACTF children’s television productions. These resources also provide focused teaching activities supporting the Australian Curriculum for English and the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).
Topics explored will include:
- Engaging students to critically think about persuasive devices and develop skills and knowledge of applying persuasive techniques in verbal and non-verbal situations.
