The Animalia: Primary Teaching Resource developed by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation adapts the animated TV series into a significant multimedia resource to support primary teachers in exploring the themes of Civic & Citizenship, Values and Identity. The TV series is based on the picture book, Animalia by Graeme Base.
The resource offers 39 embedded clips and more than 100 teaching activities and related student activity sheets, based on the e5 teaching framework, that explore the concepts of democratic rights of individuals, elections and leadership, freedom of expression, tolerance, respect, responsibility and inclusion. Additionally, there are 12 selected episodes and an interactive game for students to learn about leadership, relationships and problem solving; stills and information about the series, plus numerous hyperlinks to other resources.
The workshop will explore the three main themes relate to the General Capabilities of the Australian Curriculums, and how the resource supports teachers to integrate these ideas in their teaching and learning programs:
Civics and Citizenship
Civics and citizenship education promotes students' participation in the democratic process. Through watching the episodes and clips, students should start to understand, discuss and develop knowledge of values and dispositions of active and informed citizenship.
Values
Values education supports students in developing an understanding of values such as caring for others and the environment, empathy; doing your best; fair go; freedom; honesty and trustworthiness; integrity; respect; responsibility and understanding, tolerance, resilience and inclusion.
Identity
Identity explores the concepts of character and belonging. Through watching the episodes and clips, students should begin to analyse and deconstruct their own family; its history, ancestry, traditions and connection to local and global communities. Students should start to understand why people choose to be who they are and why they make the decisions they do.
