First Day (1995) - Teaching Resource Professional Learning Resource
About this Professional Learning Resource
First Day is a 75-minute documentary that follows the lives of 11 young Australians as they experience their first day at school. We follow the children and their families in the weeks leading up to the first day and observe the variety of ways in which family cultures and contexts affect the preparation of each child for school. When the first day arrives, we follow the children waking up, getting ready, getting to school, and their reactions to being there. A unique view into the world of children.
The video and guide booklet are resources for teachers and students at senior secondary and tertiary level as well as professional and community groups and parents of preschool children.
In this unit, students analyse the structure of this documentary, the techniques used in making the film and problems faced by filmmakers when working with children.
