About this Resource

The My Place television series, based on the classic picture book by Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins, is a ‘time machine’ which takes audiences back into the past. It depicts the history of one Australian community through the eyes of the diverse children who lived there, highlighting the ways that First Nations people and immigrants have shaped our national story.  

Drawing on this theme of diversity, the 2021 My Place Competition prompts students to reflect on and celebrate the diversity in their own communities. In 2021, we are asking Australian children: tell us about your place.

Jointly presented by ABC Education and the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF), the 2021 My Place Competition is open to primary students in Years 3 – 6 and special education students of all ages.

Key Dates

Entries can be uploaded to the competition page between 16 August – 17 September 2021.

Winners will be announced in early Term 4.

 

Categories

Year 3 and 4 – Up to 500 words

Year 5 and 6 – Up to 750 words

Special Education – No word limit. Please add 'Special Education' along with your student's relevant year level when submitting their entry. 

 

What to write about

The 2021 My Place Competition asks students to reflect on life in their own communities. Participants are invited to submit a short piece of creative writing that captures the diverse history of their own local area. This could include narratives, historical recounts, letters, diary entries, news reports, poetry, or other forms of creative writing.  

With the competition theme linking to the Year 3 – 6 Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum, students might choose to incorporate one or more of the following understandings in their work:

  • The contributions that individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds have made to the development and character of the local community, including First Nations People or migrant groups
  • Change and continuity in the community over time
  • The culturally diverse celebrations and commemorations observed in the community
  • What life was like for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples in the area before European settlement
  • Stories of migration from within the community
  • Other relevant concepts explored through HASS inquiries.

 

What to avoid writing about

Students should not include any personal information about themselves or others that would allow someone else to identify them.

Winning entries will be published on ABC Education and ACTF websites and social media channels.

 

Prizes

Walker Books is generously providing book packs to all placegetters as part of this year’s prize package. Placegetters will also receive a signed copy of My Place and a certificate of achievement.

Additionally, winning students in each category will receive vouchers to spend in the ACTF Shop:

1st place: $100 ACTF voucher

2nd place: $75 ACTF voucher

3rd place: $50 ACTF voucher

All teachers of placegetters will receive a copy of the My Place book.
