All over the world, children’s television is entering uncharted territory.

With new platforms increasing the competition for audiences, and mainstream broadcasters struggling to retain viewers, the relevance of support mechanisms for locally-produced children’s content are being called into question. At the same time, communities are increasingly vocal around the value of local content for children. In the UK this discussion is very advanced, and this year the British Film Institute’s Young Audiences Content Fund (YACF) is up and running.

The YACF provides both production and development funding for content intended for UK audiences aged 18 and under. The fund has £60 million to invest over three years across all genres, with a focus on shows that reflect UK cultural identity and the nations and regions of the UK.

The ACTF is delighted to sponsor the “In Conversation with Jackie Edwards” session at the Screen Forever conference, so that Australian producers and policy makers can hear how the Fund works, why it was established and what it’s seeking to achieve for British children. Libbie Doherty, Head of Children’s Production at the ABC, will lead the conversation with Jackie.
